An oldie, but goodie*5+ Stars* A truly epic read! One of my all-time, unforgettable favorites!Years is a breathtaking historical romance that I have been rereading faithfully since my teen years. It was my first (mildly steamy) "adult" read, so I may be slightly biased in my opinion, but this has to be one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read.Lavyrle Spencer is an amazing storyteller who knows how to play with a reader's heartstrings. Her stories are tender, but powerful, and Years is a [...]
Eager to begin her first teaching position, lovely Linnea Brandonberg stepped off the train looking as grown up and worldly as her eighteen years would allow. The golden fields and fragrant wheat of Alamo, North Dakota, were as new and different as the Westgaard family with whom she would live. This book was interesting. I haven't read a lot of stories set in this era. World War I in America. Linnea is young and innocent but she has a backbone too. It's her first job away from home, teaching in r [...]
This was ultimately a disappointment for me.It started out great, with the plucky young teacher arriving in the small community lost in the middle of endless, golden wheatfields, full of dreams, hopes, and.her imaginary friend that she likes to talk to out loud. The hero, a grumpy, bitter, cynical farmer who has to play reluctant host to the "little missy" soon throws a figurative bucket of cold water on all her bursting sparks of energy and goodwill (though he was so curmudgeonly that I wouldn't [...]
This won't be a review, more of a rant and an outpouring of emotions. And I'm not guaranteeing that it will be coherent. The first half of the book was pretty good. Even with the immaturity of Lin, Teddy was a nice hero, and his family amazing. I was just feeling nice and smug that the hero and the heroine just got married everything was rosy and perfect, and then one damn disaster after another. The spoilers are pretty bad, just a FYI.(view spoiler)[First Teddy's brother John (whom I loved) die [...]
09/23/2014 --I was talking to my friend Jill the other day. We were discussing good books of a certain caliber. She wanted to know about really good Native American reads. We chatted a bit and I mentioned this one. It is not Native American, but I call it "prairie" romance. It is utter perfection.I read this one when it first came out; 1986. My daughter was two years old. Life was very different for me then. I was a stay at home mom. I read to pass time while seeing to the house and to my childr [...]
Lavyrle Spencer is, in my opinion, the best romance writer of all the ones out there I have come across her books take place in many places throughout America, in various time frames, yet always come across as current and applicable to any woman, anywhere, at any point in time Her ability to create rich characters filled with human flaws is what appeals to me most. None of them are perfectly gorgeous, with fabulous lives and not all of them have happy endings in the way we think of, or expect fr [...]
Hmmmm. After reading Spencer's Morning Glory, this tale pales a bit in comparison. It's good in its own right, but nothing when compared to some of Spencer's other work. I liked Linnea and Teddy, but sometimes their immature antics grated on the nerves a bit. I enjoyed their chemistry together, but felt like there wasn't really enough time spent on just them. Once they got together, it was like they'd never fallen in love. And that was disappointing. The avalanche of bad that occurs in the final [...]
Highly recommend!!This book isn't just about a slow burning romance, this book is about a community, family, farming life, how World War One changes a country behind the scenes, the galloping of wild horses in winter, the seasons changing Quite frankly, this book written twenty years ago with such richness and character depth, is going to make everything else seem two dimensional and simplistic for a very long time, this has set a very high bar.If you love the complexity of Anne Of Green Gables, [...]
*Warning: Major Spoilers!* I only got halfway through this book before I called it quits. BUT I still gave what I read of this book 4 stars. If I didn't like it enough to finish it, why did I rate it so highly?I loved everything about Years the beginning. Linnea Brandonberg and Theodore Westgaard were very likeable characters. The storyline, the side characters, the changes Linnea and Theodore went through around each other--it was all brilliant. In the beginning of Years, I got the impression t [...]
I love this may december romance that takes place during the first World War. The hero and heroine are both well developed and interesting. The secondary characters are well done. The sense of place and history are spot on. It is interesting to read a novel taking place during the first World War because that is a little used time period in romances. Very well done all around.
Absolutely loved this one!

I had pretty low expectations about this book. I was looking for a light summer read and this was one of my recommendations. Don't you love it when a book ends up being 10x better than you expected?! It happened with this book! No, it's not high literature and there are times when the dialogue sounds like something out of a Hallmark movie; but, the story is truly entrancing and very well crafted. If you want something that engages all the emotions, you'll get it here. I chuckled at some humorous [...]
First off, I have to clarify that I read this book because the author was listed on a "clean authors" list so I thought I would give one of her books a try. Unfortunately, it wasn't as clean as I like to keep it so I will not be reading anymore of LaVyrle Spencer's books. I know everyone has a different definition of "clean" so I will be a little more detailed so other readers can make an informed decision. There were no descriptions of sex until after they were married and then they got pretty [...]
While reading "Years", I've enjoyed being transported to North Dakota in 1917-18 and - over the course of some 450 pages - being totally immersed in the life of the Norwegian Westgaard clan. There was a genuine and very tangible sense of family in this book and that’s what touched me to the core. I loved every bit of description of the Westgaards' daily life on the farm and their connection to nature. There were hardships and there were simple joys in those times, and it felt absolutely amazin [...]
Nice story, not great. I felt this was more about family and community life than romance. It took place in 1917 in a N. Dakota wheat farming community. The title "Years" refers to the age difference between an 18 year old school teacher falling in love with a 34 year old farmer. The development of their romance was interesting, but the story had its share of tears from tragedies and the harsh life. It was a nice story, but I prefer a little more romance than this offered. Sexual content: mild.
There's nothing truly profound about this book, but I love the characters, who all seemed so real, and the story, which even made me cry. There was no great message, no great adventure, it was just how real it all felt to me and how much I cared about what happened to everyone that got to me.
Lovely book. But what's with the cover picture? Mine was an old paperback edition I picked up used and the cover was very different!! I'm glad, because I never would have read it based on the cover in this picture. In addition, it's not representative of the book at all.
I must've read this romance novel a dozen times already. I don't know what it is about this classic but everytime I read it it makes me smile and wish I was Linnea :)
It is so hard to review this book; it is a very good book, in the sense that has good storytelling and great scene setting, with lovely midwest historical descriptions but I could not enjoy it as I hoped. The heroine had her own growing to do, and experiences to gain, all in the expansive length of one year (!!) while the hero overcomes the most awful barrier of his "old" age before he gains some sense. And then not. Because he keeps plenty of excuses before acting on his feelings, including bei [...]
Every once in a while a book lands in your possession that will sweep you away. The characters and storyline will engulf all your emotions beyond your wildest imagination. Years by LaVyrle Spencer is fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I was so swept away in Linnea & Theodore’s journey through this amazing story. The entire Westgaard’s family wrapped themselves around my heart and seared their down to earth goodness into my very soul. An absolute phenomenal book and I highly recommend readi [...]
