The Spanish Planeta Prize-winning author of Little Indiscretions has returned with a highly comic satire on a high-class murder. Yes, even the rich have their vendettas. Critics compare The Last Resort to Agatha Christie's whodunits, but Posadas adds in generous doses of commentary on etiquette, high society, and gossip (which, by the way, can kill). Don't look for deep emotions or expert problem-solving skills here; instead, Spaniards masquerade as Germans, Moroccans finagle business opportunit [...]
Elderly, gay Spanish Londoner Rafael, knowing that there is nothing left in life for him, decides to spend a few weeks in a remote, luxury Moroccan hotel, then put an end to it all. Just before he departs, his gossipy niece tells him the latest juicy details about a Spanish crime passionel, and when he arrives at the hotel just whom should he find there but the delectable widow everyone assumes killed her husband in that scandalous case. Slowly, slowly, glacially slowly, Rafael decides he might [...]
Just finished this. I liked the concept of this book even if it was a bit slow for me. The characters are very well developed and the scenes were well set. I wish the ending had been different, but that can happen in any genre. I've heard that perhaps her other book, Little Indiscretions, is better. Ms. Posadas writes VERY well in her descriptions and characterizations. I don't know if I'd recommend this book or not. That would be a personal choice.
An interesting chasse-croisé. A few of the high society crowd finds themselves together in this high end resort. A gossip who intends to end his life, a recently widowed woman, a few illegitimate couples. All the ingredients are there for a recipe for murder, gossip and maybe, just maybe a little love. A solid story that explores the consequences of rumors, gossip, morality and ethics in a very entertaining way.
Naff and poorly written with dreams of grandeur which it absolutely does not deserve to have.
Ugh. Shallow and empty without a proper ending, the only thing clever was the title.
A psychological thriller, but not many thrills.
I liked that leisurely study of the lives of the people surrounding the hero, who notices it all without attracting much attention to himself.
