Published in 2003 by PressInterest Level: 5th Grade+This is a great book where Ed Young explores different Chinese characters that have the heart character in them. Many of these words are about character traits that are a deep part of Chinese/Asian culture. The idea of dissecting characters, defining them, and determining a related meaning from one part the other is a genius idea. Personally, I had always known that this was how Chinese characters were formed and how meaning was ascribed, but [...]

Picture BookI lost interest less than 1/4 of the way through this book and then flipped through the rest. The reason was this is not a story book; it is an explanation of Chinese symbols. The author has chosen 26 Chinese symbols that include a heart and then breaks down the parts to explain what each one means. For example, the symbol for respect has the signs for 20, hands, and a heart. Therefore, the twenty pairs of hands represent twenty generations. Acknowledging the wisdom of older generati [...]

This is the most amazing book ever! I love it! I’m ordering it right away for myself. I love the meanings and symbols of Asia culture because they always seem so wise. This books defines the meanings and symbols of 26 Chinese characters as they relate to the heart. It is an amazing book for Adults. I think that kids would enjoy the illustrations and appreciate the cultural meaning, high schoolers and particularly adults would enjoy and appreciate the meaning within.

In this book are the 26 Chinese symbols that include the symbol for "heart." Heart is a component of 26 other emotional states. Young accompanies each congi symbol with a collage illustration and an explanation of each of the component symbols. Extremely interesting and beautiful!

This is one of my all-time favorite kids' books. It's especially good for years when Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day coincide. I read it to my second graders and then we create our own "Voices of the Heart" book making individual collages and "heart" statements. I love Ed Young!
