Short fun romp. Characterisation pretty tight for the length and good suspense too. Wish it had been longer really, that's my main gripe; I think there was too much story for the page count. But fully enjoyed what was there.
The first Liberator novel is a riot of noise, violence and fun, the summer blockbuster of the science fiction novel. This shorter story from the same universe shows a very different side, every bit as taut, dark and unsettling as Liberator is freewheeling, brash and stirring.A vessel headed out to a distant star system comes across an ancient artifact in uncharted deep space together with an old damaged and apparently lifeless spaceship of unknown design. Despite misgivings the lure of salvage i [...]
This is the first short story that expands the Liberator's Universe and holy Truth wrangler, it points at a very dark underscore to the whole their story arc. What exactly did they find? And to add more intrigue, why is it there? As a short story, it leaves you wanting more. I think that's what an associated short should do. Hint at the bigger picture. Give depth and in this case darkness to the misty greys of a background you rarely have a chance to glimpse, let alone see.Read this and place you [...]
A survey ship on a long, boring mission is pulled out of warp by a gravity anomaly, and finds itself near a "henge" of giant, impossibly old megaliths, surrounding a light-emitting object like a small star. A huge derelict ship floats nearby. The survey ship crew thinks of the salvage. We, of course, are thinking they should get the hell out of there. It's a set up that's been used before, but it's done well here. For such a small "novellette", the crew are well-drawn, especially the main charact [...]
Primordial is a free novelette set in the same universe as the Liberator novel. It’s around 9,000 words long, so ideal for reading in one or two sittings. Like Liberator, it’s got some slight frisky time as well as fairly harsh violence, so if you’re after a lovely clean read, this isn’t for you. With that caveat in mind, I thought Primordial was a great little story. It follows a salvage operation gone wrong, with a perfectly paced plot. The small cast is sufficiently developed (the main [...]
