I enjoyed this new world from Viola Grace with a great heroine with many cool skills. It is a silly start. A food blogger would not be asked to go on a ride along. I am not sure why Grace did this. However, the mystery is good. The romance is pretty thin in this first installment and this is a serial. Bleh. Serial. However, all the paranormal races are fun and the action is fun.The heroine has great parents and friends but the heroes are barely developed. So, this book is a see saw of good and bad [...]
I don't know who these people are giving this book five stars, but let's just say they have an amazingly tolerant ear for sentences. My first reaction on getting into this book was to wonder if it had been written a) originally in some other language and translated by Google Interpreter or something b) written by a computer c) written by aliens studying the stuff NASA has sent out. Everything seems artificial and plastic, like actual human beings are a strange and unfamiliar thing to this author [...]
I love Viola Grace/Zenina Masters' writing. That said, she has upped her skills in this new series, and I'm delighted that she has.Benny Ganger is a bitzer in a most delightful way. She has many different supernatural ancestors but looks human. She has been leading a human life working for the local newspaper and writing a cooking blog.Forced into a ride-along with XIA, supernatural law-enforcement, her ancestry comes out when young women's bodies turn up without souls or blood. Her XIA team con [...]
This is a note to myself. It's not, nor is intended as, a review. Nope, no way. If I have to judge from these few pages, it's going to be a disaster. A food blogger is called to write an investigative piece for a newspaper. Yeah. Solid. She's hiding as human, but acts as other. Very solid.Cheesy doesn't cover the dialogue, plus it's 5 bucks for a hundred pagesThank you, but no.
I surprisingly liked this one and had no expectations. This is sort of urban fantasy but what I liked best were the characters. There are flaws but the simplicity of the story has to have some points.I'm intrigued enough about the whole paranormal society and all the species included to read the next one one day.
I started this book thinking it would be a longer short story, as most of Grace's books are. After a few chapters I realized that it was much monger, but was having such a good time I didn't care. The heroine is a journalist who has some magical power. Some time before a magical event occurred and there are now various magical beings. Some of these beings cause problems, so there is a special police force that was put into place to keep the order. Our heroine, Benny, has had her own reasons to s [...]
Another gem from Viola Grace. This is book one of her new series, An Obscure Magic, and I already can't wait for the next book!Benny, a journalist with a food blog, is assigned to ride along with an XIA team for the week to write an article on the XIA agency as she is the only journalist who can pass as human.During her week with the three agents, her secrets are revealed, a dark evil threatens her existence, and she develops an attraction to all three agents.Journey into the imagination of Viola [...]
Well, I liked it! Insta-love and all. Seriously insta-love. The world-building was more in depth than usual and I really appreciated that, but then there came a point where it felt like she just gave up and just started chucking everything at us because the END WAS COMING!! The only character that got developed was the MC and the parents. Apparently the love-interests are notportant. Still, enjoyed it and will read more.
Pretty cover, poorly written.
By the end of chapter 9, it became blatantly obvious this was a book not published by an indie publishing company. I'm totally OK with an indie author self-pub'ing all the way, but at one point in chapter 4, I was like, is this really going to possibly go (view spoiler)[menage a trios (hide spoiler)]?? Is she really going have this great secret (view spoiler)[that she reveals so casually by chapter 9 (hide spoiler)]??Honestly, is she really in all that much danger? Isn't she just (view spoiler)[ [...]
What the hell?I like Viola Grace stories - they're usually short and sweet and so I was excited to start reading this full length novel. But honestly, I didn't get to far into it before I dropped it in my DNF pile. It's just so bad!? I don't understand. It's stilted and robotic and so weak - Ms. Grace should still to short stories!
This was a train wreck. The writing was cold and emotionless. I felt like I was reading an instruction manual. There was no feeling what so ever. Words on paper nothing more or less. I can't believe people spent 5 bucks on such a short an awful ebook - and they rave about it giving it 5 stars. I'm not sure we all had the same book
3.5 stars. It looks like this is going to be a good series, it's just a pity that it's only about 100 pages long. However, there's a lot packed into this book and all of it is interesting. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next.
DNF! So this book is just well boring to say the least, maybe it would have picked up but half way though and nothing is happening. Plus Benny is just too prefect. She barely flicks her wrist and is solving huge problems left and right that the so called professionals can't figure out. Ugh!
mfmm polyamorous. good story, probably would have rated it higher if the three parts of the story had been marketed as one complete book. Not technically a serial because there was an "ending".I liked the characters and the premise of the story. BTW I did buy all three books in the series.
This book was too much, the main character has all the powers because she is part every supernatural being that ever existed, three love interests, one of each kind and what it doesn't have it's a plot. I'll give 2 stars just because I finish it.
Really enjoyedReally enjoyed this book . Characters are fun, intelligent and I am looking forward to reading more in the series.
I actually really enjoyed reading this book. It was my first time reading anything by this author and loved the idea of the multi-raced woman, part human, lots of parts of other creatures and beings. Benny has been living her life mostly as a human; her looks ensures she only needs a little glamour to hide what she really is. She works as a journalist and blog writer and seeing as she looks the most human is assigned to working with the XIA, the eXtranormal Investigation Agency, to celebrate the [...]
I thought this book was seriously fun!The magic is interesting, the characters fleshed out enough to be interesting but leaving some room for more books to reveal more. I've read several in this series, and it's a cool idea to have each book about a different community member, with the others as supporting characters in each other's bookse length is a little short, she could have fleshed out some scenes, or added more to fill out a few more pages, but I still loved it enough to get 4 more in the [...]
Interesting worldAuthor has a tendency to overload her heroes / main characters with powers, but the world and story are entertaining enough to keep me reading. Though I do wish she'd take a punctuation refresher (Otherwise, the editing is pretty good).
Great story.I enjoyed this story. I can't wait to see what happens next. The plot and romance kept me invested in the story. I would recommend reading this book.
I was misled about this book. I'm not sure if it was the cover or the description, but for some reason I really though the protagonist was some kind of cyborg/humany being and that the agency she was shadowing were policing unauthorized cyborg populations. I don't know where I got turned around. Anyway, I was wrong. It didn't affect my opinion of the book, it just made it a bit harder to follow at first.Benny has an interesting family tree, combining many species culminating in her. Because of h [...]
not consistent or believablePros - interesting magic and family, wild magical and supernatural race mix. Cons - 1. incredibly stilted dialogue. The reviewer who said 'normal people use contractions' was absolutely right. Some of the dialogue sounded like it was translated from German, or some other much more formal tongue, and given the subject matter, the overly formal speech was especially grating.2. The insta-relationships. The immediate sexual teasing, seductive behavior between the 4 leads [...]
I'm confused by this book. Not in a "I don't get the plot" kind of way, because that's very easy to follow. It's everything else. (view spoiler)[So you have this protagonist who's a news paper reporter/food blogger? Or something. And she gets assigned to do a ride along with supernormal cops, because of course when you want someone to ride along with cops, you send your food blogger. Not, say, a journalist who specializes inories involving people. At all. Of any type. And she's got some deep dar [...]
One Part Human has its pros and cons for me. Pros: The family is freaking awesome, the ending reminds me of a scene from Mulan, which is hilarious, the magic is cool, and the plot is too.Cons: The way Benny suddenly spilled everything without even breaking a drop of sweat. Umm what? I get that there is some kind of insta-flirt/love thing with all THREE agents. By the way, these agents do not seem that professional in this sense -- I was hoping for something along the lines of "Hitman" bad asses, [...]
I was sad that one of my favorite (auto buy) authors was cutting back on books that I had looked forward to getting on the 1st and 15th of every month to write a new series. I should not have been. This new world made me remember what started my love of Viola Grace/Zenina Masters books. She has written literally hundreds of books and I enjoy all her series, but her Nexus series was what really got me hooked. The first story in the new series "Under His Claw" is actually a short (big surprise) wr [...]
Benny is a recipe blogger who is tasked with riding along with three agents of the XIA, the eXtranormal Investigation Agency. It is the anniversary of the agency, and they need to improve their exposure with the general public. These are the male protagonists of this story —a vampire, a shifter and a fey. The book progresses rapidly as it becomes apparent that someone is targeting Benny due to her unique blend of ancestry that has resulted in her containing a hotchpotch of magical skills. This [...]
Grace is one of those authors who makes a story fun and entertaining while also creating an in-depth story that will keep you hooked to the pages from cover to cover. Her vivid descriptions bring this novel to life in an unparalleled manner. The world building allowed me to walk alongside the characters as the exciting plot unfolded. The characters that Grace has created for this story are fantastically developed and so very real. I love the differences in personalities, yet how the team meshed [...]
Even though I mostly enjoyed this book, it was too short. Lots of parts of the story happened as if more had happened among the characters. There's a girl, Benny, who is a very special snowflake. She has this illustrious, impossible family tree (with one of everything in it) but goes by as a recipe reporter. She is sent on a ride along with paranormal police officers. It was actually only a few days, but the three officers are already endeared to the girl and she, who is not supposed to let on a [...]
