The Good: I love superheroes and strong women, so, when you put the two together, you've got a winning formula! This comic book omnibus features some names that were previously familiar to me--She-Hulk, Black Widow, and Ms. Marvel--and one that wasn't: Squirrel Girl? Seriously? These are all origin stories of the various superheroines, which is good for those who aren't familiar with the characters. Other Marvel stars, such as Iron Man, make appearances as well. The artwork is fabulous, as usual [...]
I think I've read this before as a trade. But I also know I've read many of these single issues under their respective titles. So I'm left wondering why it was compiled as such?
It's a bunch of #1s, but they're GOOD #1s.
This graphic novel collects the first issues of some of Marvel's female superhero series, including Thor, Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, She-Hulk and Black Widow, and serves as a great introduction to the characters. I picked this up in the library so that I could try out a variety of different female superheroes before investing time in the individual volumes and I'm so glad I did. Experiencing these comics this way meant that I could pick out which art styles I enjoyed an [...]
A collection of first stories of various Marvel female superheroes. All of these I've read before. You've got a Black Widow story, which is one of the good ones, before the book went downhill. You've got a She-Hulk story which is surprisingly good as are most of the She-Hulk stories. You've got Captain Marvel about to go back to space - a weaker story though not bad. And Ms. Marvel - all of which so far has been awesome. And Thor. Sigh. The world of Thor always drives me crazy with its mythologi [...]
A-Force Presents introduces some of the gutsy-girls of the Marvel universe. You get just enough of each of their stories to tantalize. I'm already a huge Ms. Marvel fan, so I'm current on her collected stories. Apart from her, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading She-Hulk and Squirrel Girl (seriously, a girl who has squirrel powers??). Those are two I'll seek out independently. Captain Marvel and Thor may also be worth another look, but I didn't connect with Black Widow at all.
Lets be honest - a small little book containing only the very first issues of 6 different comics is not exactly going to be a gripping read; All you are getting is a bunch of prologues. As a one off volume though, I can see some merit. It's a sample platter to see if there are any of the individual stories you might want to pursue in the future. I my case I might look a bit more into the new Thor and Ms Marvel - but none of the other stories did anything that piqued my interest.Art wise, it's a [...]
I bought this volume of A-Force Presents just after it was released, and promptly forgot that it existed. I'm planning on unhauling it soon, because it's only a collection of the first issues of six different series, but before getting rid of it I decided to get a taste of She-Hulk, Black Widow and Ms. Marvel (I've already read Thor, Captain Marvel and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl in their own volumes).I'm not sure whether I'd be interested in carrying on with Black Widow because I didn't enjoy [...]
These are the first issues of these people and nothing new. Kind of a rip off. I guess it's good to see if you want to read them.
Comic readers would love this, especially if they are interested in the Marvel women. Comics are just not my thing.
A collection of the first issues of Ms Marvel, Captain Marvel, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, She-Hulk, Thor and Black Widow. It's a great way to get them in hard copy for reading versus on the screen.
When I saw the listing for this at my local library, I'd already read a few volumes of Ms Marvel and the first volume of Thor, so I already knew how I felt about those. My library also has Squirrel Girl, Captain Marvel, and Black Widow, but we don't have She-Hulk at all. So I felt this was a good way to taste-test several series at once without chasing down separate books for each one.Black Widow #1Even without what I've gleaned from the movies (which isn't all that much, let's face it), I feel [...]
Very fun! This is the first time I've read any Squirrel Girl, even though my friends are always talking about it. I should have read her sooner.
Disclaimer: I enjoy comics and graphic novels from time to time, but am not a "comics person" - so this review is for other neophytes and sometimes-readers like me. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing it will annoy the heck out of "real" comics readers. Ok, then. It's hard to effectively rate or review this, because, like all compilations, it's a collection of distinct stories. So, I'll give one review of the concept, the whole, and a little on each part. The concept/whole: Genius. I've been [...]
This is actually a bit different to what I thought it was going to be. I thought it was A-Force, Volume 1: Hypertimebut it’s actually the first edition for 6 different female Marvel comics. There’s Black Widow, She-Hulk, Thor, Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. I was aware of most of these characters but it was interesting to read some of the other comics and see different styles. My favourites out of this were She-Hulk, Ms Marvel and Squirrel Girl. I didn’t mind t [...]
This was a thoroughly enjoyable collection of introduction/ origin stories for a number of Marvel Now! female superheroes. Ms. Marvel was my favorite: her voice and personality and culture are portrayed with such clarity, and I feel like her story has a lot of potential. I also enjoyed Captain Marvel, who is strong and sassy and good at what she does, but with enough issues to make her human. I didn't know her backstory with Iron Patriot before, so that was also interesting. Black Widow is great [...]
Collects Black Widow (2014) #1, Captain Marvel (2014) #1, Ms. Marvel (2014) #1, She-Hulk (2014) #1, Thor (2014) #1, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (2015) #1. It's a great way to get a sampling of comics that I might not have read. It's nice to see Marvel women representing. Captain Marvel and Thor were the standouts for me, but I enjoyed all of them. Squirrel Girl was surprisingly entertaining, but I have trouble imagining her as one of the AIM Avengers. I'm liking Ms. Marvel, I can't wait to see how [...]
A collection of first issues, this is only a teaser of the stories, which is hard to sell just by itself. None of the stories are bad, but some are better or at least have more potential. The captain Marvel and Ms Marvel comics seemed the better, while the female Thor seemed a decent twist and Squirrel Girl seemed quirky and had more humour than the others. Not a shallow attempt at winning over feminists, which I thought could be. Itself it's hard to justify in buying it, but decent enough to te [...]
Basically what this is is a chapter (or in this case, issue) sampler for the Black Widow, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Thor, Ms. Marvel, and Squirrel Girl comics. I liked them all, but since I could only read the first issues I didn't really get a strong sense of what the stories are about. If someone offered to give me any of the full volumes of any of these comics I'd be happy, but I don't think I'll go out and buy the full volumes of any of these comics because comics are expensive and I read th [...]
This collection contains the #1 issues from various female-fronted avengers comics. I'd read Ms Marvel before, and enjoyed it enough to read the next few issues. I'd never even heard of Squirrel Girl, but found her story light and fun. I enjoyed She-Hulk and Captain Marvel enough that I'm ordering the next few issues. The only one I didn't enjoy as much was Thor, despite the fact that it was the one I was most intrigued by. First of all, this first issue barely has her in it. It's all about the [...]
Actual rating: 4 1/2This was such a great, fun comic! If you like feminism, superheroes, and diverse and relatable characters, then pick this up right now. This comic book has six parts, each one focusing and introducing a separate character. Many of the characters were great and had a lot of girl-power.The art is sort of distinctive for the separate comics, but I loved the art in the Black Widow part, and the others were also really nice.I'm excited to read more of this series!
I enjoyed some of the individual stories, but I don't think it works well as a collection. There's nothing cohesive about it whatsoever, except that the protagonists are female. I'm a big Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk fan, and I am excited to see how the new femme Thor plays out. But as a collection, I found this volume lacking.
This contains the first issue of six different stories and I wasn't sure whether it would serve as a good introduction to the various worlds or not be enough to pull me in. It turned out to be a bit of both for me, though I did appreciate the intro to She-Hulk and Squirrel Girl who were the two characters I knew the least about and enjoyed the most (plus Ms Marvel but I'd already read that).
Twitter had led to some curiosity regarding one of the titles contained in this book. My deale *ahems* a nice bloke at the comic shop suggested picking up this trade, in order to get a taste of the various female characters.Instead of finding one new comic line to pursue, I now have four.
Awesome that this includes a sampler of a bunch of issue number ones. However, none give you a full story, making this collection feel like an advertisement and not a cohesive unit. This has a very specialized use in order to try to entice someone to try out at least one of the new comic book lines from Marvel. But outside of that, it's unsatisfying.
This book is just a cash grab. All it is, is the first issues of all of these characters ongoing series that have already been collected in their own books. Marvel should be giving this away for free to drive interest to their books, not charging $15 bucks for it.
Surprised to find this was a collection of first issues of a bunch of lady led comics instead of A-Force, but it was a pleasant surprise. Now I'm going to have to read all of She-Hulk and Squirrel Girl. Great introduction to their lady-led lines.
compilation of a bunch of different powerful female superheroes. gets your feet wet with black widow, she-hulk, captain marvel, ms. marvel, thor, and the unbeatable squirrel girl (all the first comics of their respective series). awesome.
Episode 1 of several Marvel Superheroines. I had previously read Thor and Ms Marvel and found both quite good, this added some heroines to graphic novels I have to search out. She-Hulk looks very interesting but Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is not my type.
Only Squirrel Girl was new to me, and I loved that just as much as I loved the others.
