I really enjoyed this story, but for its age range it's rather simplistic and would probably be better for younger readers, although I guess any age group could read it. Its themes of cheerful friendship are nice but written in a way that I don't think would appeal to anyone over six years old.
Eliza and her quirky shadow delight as they do their best to help locals and friends. It's a heartwarming story for kids. I'd love to see a slightly longer version for adults!
You can read this review and more on my blog:I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This was a delightful little story about a young woman named Eliza who, with help from her shadow, brings joy and happiness to the village of Blossom Brooke. I have been lucky enough to read two other short stories by this author, and this one is my favorite so far. I always enjoy it when a book makes me smile the entire time I read it, and there is just something so [...]
When Eliza Bluebell came to town, no one in Blossom Brook could pinpoint the exact moment or day, just that she magically appeared and changed this tiny town forever. What the townsfolk didn’t know was that Eliza brought her best friend, her shadow, with her. Full of love and joy and veiled by a sparkly mystery, Eliza spread her magic throughout the town, while teaching a lesson to those she touched.Does A. J. York sprinkle pixie dust over her words? Eliza Bluebell is a magical treat designed [...]
My Review: I always seem to be in a weird place in my life when I get an email for AJ York. Trust me it’s not a bad thing, It’s always what I need to get me out of that place and back to normal. Her books are so sweet and inspirational. Her characters are delightful, having read the Delilah Dusticle series when she emails to ask if I would read this new book it was without hesitation that I said yes.One line in the book really put a lot of what I have been going through in perspective and I [...]
Another one of A.J.'s magical stories. This one features a mysterious young woman who takes a break from her quest to find family to open a sweet shop in a small town. No one is certain how or when Eliza showed up, but everyone remembers it. After that, each chapter features one or two of the people from the town and how Eliza touches their lives. Eliza becomes a legend in the town's lore. A woman whose departure was as mysterious as her arrival. In this story, which is pretty short, I most enjo [...]
Plot/Story: Of course, with this being a children’s book, this was a rather fast paced novel, but that did not distract from the adorable story. Eliza Bluebell is a mystery. She travels with her best friend, her shadow, finding people in need and vanishes once she has done all she can for them. The story reminds me a lot of Mary Poppins and Nanny McPhee to be honest, but I loved it none the less. Eliza has come into a town full of people who need a little help. And she helps them in the most a [...]
Today We DidEliza Bluebell has a special talent; her shadow is a separate entity and is invisible to all bar Eliza. When Eliza and her shadow arrive in Blossom Brook they begin running a tearoom on the high street. On the side, Eliza and her shadow help members of the community with any problems they might be having. This is a delightful chapter book! Some magic and humour, and a lesson that helping others can be very rewarding. The language is simple with short chapters, perfect for younger chil [...]

York Eliza Bluebell is one of the most magical and beautiful book I have ever read. Right from the start of the book, there is a different feel to the characters, the settings, even the language. A certain happiness unfolds by just reading the book.Eliza Bluebell is a magical girl, and her shadow is her frie [...]
I received a copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This was a very sweet novella! It is touching and heartwarming to see how Eliza helps each of the residents of Blossom Brook, from the young to the old.Eliza has a bit of magic in her; her shadow is its own person, and Eliza is great friends with it. When she arrives in Blossom Brook, she fixes up a dilapidated old shop and turns it into something wonderful and new and improves everybody's lives.I enjoyed Eliza's kind dispositi [...]
More like 4.5 stars. A.J. York again has created a memorable, admirable heroine, who's goodness has a touch of magic to it. Eliza Bluebell is a fast, sweet read about a girl and her shadow who go around making everyone's lives better. Eliza reminded me a lot of Anne Shirley in her ability to make people realize their potential, forgive one another, or see the beauty in the world in stead of the bad.I decided on 4.5 stars instead of five because, although I loved Eliza's story, I felt like the st [...]
Eliza Bluebell by A.J. YorkEliza Bluebell comes to town. She is unique, her shadow is her best friend. Together she and her shadow open a sweet shop and the whole town is in awe and happy. An original and fun story with lovable characters and magical happenings. A pure delight for middle school readers and adults young at heart. I highly recommend Eliza Bluebell to all. Also recommended Delilah Dusticle and Delilah Dusticle's Transylvanian Adventure also by A.J. York.
Eliza is a special person that just shows up in Blossom Brook one day. With the help of her shadow she fixes up a run down store. Everyone initially disregards it because it is a tea room but after they come in something magical happens. Eliza always seems to have just what everyone wants or needs. Through gentle suggestion she helps a young girl apologize to her best friend and helps a young man broaden his experiences with baking.I really liked this book. It is a short story that would be perf [...]
My review for Delilah Dusticle, Delilah Dusticle's Transylvanian Adventure, Delilah Dusticle and the Cursed Tempest, and Eliza BluebellCute, Cute, Cute, Cute!!! These books were so delightful! I love books that have a little normal life mixed with a little magic. As much as I loved these books now, I would have adored them when I was younger!I do have to say that my favorite was Eliza Bluebell. It was such a sweet story. Eliza is a great character with a sweet and helpful personality. The chapte [...]
I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.I had read Delilah Dusticle & Delilah Dusticle’s Transylvanian Adventure and thought they were good children’s books so when A.J. York offered me a copy of Eliza Bluebell to review, I was happy to do so.Eliza is a refreshing character. She comes into town and opens a tea room and she seems to know what everyone needs whether it’s a cup of tea or a job. She is so sweet that she ends up changing the lives of everyone in the small [...]
I got this book from the author a while back, but I never wrote a review for it on . SO SORRY!!!!!I remember reading this and saying, "This book is so cute and great for my 8 year-old cousin." It has a great story with great characters. It was a really light, quick, and enjoyable read. I wished I was in that world. It was so picture perfect and someone always knew what you wanted. The writing was engaging. It was just too fast. I wish that there was more to the story and that it was longer.
Eliza Bluebell has a lot of my favourite elements in middle grade fantasy, and reminds me a lot of the books I liked best when I was tinier - except for the length! I would have liked to see it grow a little bigger, to be more than a single mouthful of a story. (But I realise an actual middle-grader might not object to a shorter story.)The chapters are short, and full of vivid, colourful characters with very distinct traits, and clearly defined problems for Eliza and her independent shadow to so [...]
I recieved this book from a giveaway. I'd give this 2.5 stars. The story is okay, but I guess I'd enjoy it more if I was younger since it is a children's book. I just felt like there was a lot that could be added or changed to make it a better story and enjoyable to read.
This review and more over at The Bibliophile ChroniclesThis sweet, charming children’s novel will have your kids smiling at bedtime! When Eliza Bluebell takes over a derelict shop in Blossom Brook, she changes the lives of the local people forever. With the help of her trusty shadow, she transforms the shop into a beautiful tea-room, While feasting on her gorgeous cakes and milkshakes, Eliza helps the residents of Blossom Brook transform their lives, and make their lives a happier place. This is [...]
Just me and my shadow, that’s what I thought as I started to read Eliza Bluebell by A. J. York. This is a cute, short book that put me in a cheerful mood when I finished. With great flow, I loved the small town feeling this book had that put a jaunt in my step as I read. Eliza can never make friends as she is a traveler, so her best friend is her shadow. When she arrives in Blossom Brook, I was surprised when she inquires about a rundown building. There’s something mysterious about Eliz but [...]
This review first appeared on my blog Christy's Cozy Corners.I received an ecopy of Eliza Bluebell free for an honest review.Eliza Bluebell is an adorable story that your children are going to love! It is magical and wonderful! Once in a great while, there is a book that I am asked to read that I end up gushing over. This is one of those books! Not to take away from the other books I’ve reviewed, but this one just has something in it that makes me want to really gush. It is the type of book I [...]
A. J. York’s Eliza Bluebell has the feel of TV’s Pushing up Daisies or the new movie, Age of Adelind. The writing offers a uniquely English blend of fairytale and modern storytelling, beautifully suited for children and adults alike. Chapter illustrations are delightfully simple, clear, and fun. And it’s hard to read without hearing that English narrator’s voice in your head. Of course, there are occasional surprises for American ears – we do drink squash in England, and it’s often f [...]
I quite liked Delilah Dusticle, and the nice little message it gave. Eliza Bluebell, for me, wasn't quite as good.Eliza breezes into a small town like the heroine of Chocolat - mysterious, opening a shop selling sweet things (here a teashop) and proceeds to help make changes to the lives of the town's inhabitants. Sweet enough. But there's a 'shadow' plot - Eliza's shadow can go off on its own and do things without Eliza being there. This seemed a bit pointless to me, it doesn't do anything very [...]
Eliza Bluebell is a mysterious woman who arrived one day at this small town. The people of Blossom Brook weren’t sure what to make of her, especially after she bought the abandoned store and turned it into a bakery. Throughout her stay, Eliza and her rambunctious shadow help each and every neighbor. The short, easy to read chapters are appropriate for young kids just starting to read chapter books. The eccentric characters will bring lots of laughter from the readers. Despite the rushed start, [...]
A.J. York's little books always remind me of books of the past. Mary Poppins, especially, but I also kept thinking of the movie Chocolat when I read this one since we get to know different characters in this small town as the story progresses. This is a charming read. However, although it is listed as a middle grade book, it doesn't have a child as its main protagonist. I'm sure kids would like this book although it doesn't quite fit the generally accepted middle grade mold But it's short and eas [...]
Simply wondrous and adorableEliza Bluebell is magical, absolutely magical. The story is for young adult but I think children of all ages would enjoy this, whether reading it or being read to, as we all need that magic that are words read to us. Eliza and her shadow give something to the new town when they open the tearoom. It's a brilliant modern-day fairy tale and it should be cherished and adored.
