4 3/4 stars to five full ones. Somewhere in there. Only because Thor was mentioned as The Best Superhero? Seriously, though. This book is exactly what I've been craving since last summer. A sweet, fun, no-over-the-top-sexy-times, RomCom. This is it!!! I felt warm and fuzzy with a little grin on my face. Shared a laugh here and there. Let my heart melt, ending with a happy little sigh. I want more! I want this over and over again. If it were a movie, I'd never stop watching it. (see also What's Y [...]

Such an adorable read! Full review to come after my blog tour date! :)UPDATE: (from the blog)This was such an adorable read! The main characters are funny, and pretty original, and despite my not having an older brother, which in turn had a best friend, I felt like I could TOTALLY relate to the heroine! She's down to earth, knows how to have fun, even if she is a bit quirky, and is looking to answer that age old question: What does love and romance LOOK like?Etty is a writer, and she's trying to [...]

When I was contacted by Emily offering me her book to review, I jumped at the chance, this sounded just up my street. Emily is a new author to me and since reading My Sort of Kind of Hero I would definitely want to read more from her. This is a brilliant chick lit book, it is light and fun. I love the story line of this book, I could visually see it all coming together and the characters were brilliant. This is a story about Etty, she is a struggling writer who has been knocked back several time [...]

This was a really cute, fun read. Etty has been writing historical romance because she wanted to write and there was a need for them in the market. Now she's trying something new - writing a based-on-a-true story romance. Now she just needs to find the true story to base her novel on She decided to recruit her brother's BFF (and her childhood friend) Travis. He'll go on dates and fall in love, and she'll follow him around and record it all. What could go wrong?Etty made me shake my head several [...]

Emily Harper already belongs to my auto - buy author category. After reading "Checking Inn" I have immediately bought her debut novel "White Lies" and it sits comfortably on my kindle and waits patiently to be eventually read by yours truly. I was also very, very excited to learn that Emily is publishing her third novel, squeeeee excited to be honest and couldn't wait to read this gem.Etty is an author who writes historic romances but her heart - and the hearts of the readers too - is not so muc [...]

My Sort-of, Kind-of Hero is a fantastically fun love story about finding true love when you least expected it. Etty Lawrence is a romance Author, problem is no one buys her love stories. She decides to switch directions and enlists the aid of her long time family friend to write a story about him falling in love. She joins him on a few dates and suddenly starts wishing Travis would keep those smiles for her alone. Number of times it made us laugh: 15+Number of times it made us swoon with envy:6J [...]

Posted originally reviewedthebook/2014 My Sort-of, Kind-of Hero sounded like a brilliant book. A sweet and entertaining romantic comedy was what I was expecting and it definitely delivered. It’s the first of Emily’s books I’ve read, though I’ve heard lots of good things, and I’m sure it won’t be my last. More so even than the romance, I love reading books where one of the characters is an author. That Etty was an author and a struggling one at that was quite endearing to read. Seeing [...]

I would first like to thank Emily for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, this is the first of Emily's books that I have read and it definitely won't be the last. I instantly fell in love with her writing style and the way she makes the characters jump off the page.I loved the whole concept of this book, it is a brilliant idea having the main character in a book actually writing a book of their own, this gives you an insight to the world of writing and the trouble th [...]

Etty writes historical romance. She's written several books already, but so far she hasn't got many readers and she's still looking for an agent and a publisher. In the meantime she's working in a comic book store. Because her writing career doesn't seem to go anywhere she's going to try something different for her next book. She asks her best friend Travis if she can follow him to documents his love life and she wants to accompany him on his dates. Etty's sure he will find true love and she wan [...]

I was given an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review as part of the blog tour organised by Candlelit Author Services, which I'm more than happy to do.Etty the lead character knows she has a 'best seller' in her she just has to find a way of getting it onto paper and she thinks Travis, childhood friend and almost brother is the person who can help her do it. She had been writing historic, romance novels - hoping for the big break when on the advise of Travis, switches genre to moder [...]

Emily Harper’s latest book, My Sort-of, Kind-of Hero, is about Etty, a not-so-successful romance author. She decides to change things up a bit for her next novel. She wants to follow around someone, the perfect hero for her book, to observe him falling in love so she can write a realistic romance. Once she realizes that her lifelong friend, Travis, could be perfect for her book, she tries to convince him to let her follow him around. He reluctantly agrees. However, things don’t turn out the [...]

Originally posted on Paris Baker's Book NookThis is the first Emily Harper book I’ve read. I was provided with a review copy, and had heard some great things, so I was really looking forward to reading it.What I hadn’t realised, is just how much I would damn right love it. Emily’s writing is fantastic, in the sense that it is so easy to read because the narrative has such a natural sound. I really loved that. It’s hard to describe, but it almost didn’t feel like reading a book; it neve [...]

Originally posted on: addictivechicklitAfter reading and loving Emily's debut novel, White Lies, I was very excited to read her latest book. With a colourful and cute cover, My Sort-of, Kind-of Hero is a lovely, fun light read. Our heroine, Etty, is really likeable and makes you laugh non-stop with her crazy ideas and not so well thought plans. She is like a breath of fresh air.As for the story, it has this feel-good heart-warming touch that will leave you grinning like a toon. Some of the situa [...]

I am Emily Harper’s biggest fan. No arguments, I just am. Her books just get better and better and My Sort-of Kind-of Hero only goes to prove that.Etty is simply brilliant as the lead character: she’s quirky, big hearted and slightly in denial about her extreme party planning urges. Emily pens her to perfection and readers will love how fun she makes the story – plus a good few authors will be able to relate to her struggles as a writer. Travis is laid-back and charming, he slots into the [...]

I would like to thank Charlotte at BestChickLit, CandleLit Tours and the author for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. When we first meet Etty she is at a coffee shop working on her latest historical romance offering, but she is suffering from writers block and things go from bad to worse at a book signing when no one wants to buy her books. Her friend advises that she should write about something that she knows about, Etty hits on the idea to write about some [...]

This book was highly disappointing. I didn't find it to be humorous in the least bit and struggled to get through it, even skimming through it because some of the background information was just insignificant. The writing was very lackluster and boring, and the characters were not developed. Overall, this book was a waste of time for me - just silly and ridiculous.

It was okay - there are certain areas around Etty's behaviour that really annoyed me (who accuse a woman as 'loose' anymore?! Slut shaming is never okay). But I like the way Travis describe love in the book and enjoyed the read overall.

There's something about Emily's writing, something so warm and unique, it's really hard to explain. But I'm sure of one thing, no matter how many books she writes, no matter if she sticks to chick lit genre or decides to include some other elements (l [...]

I so enjoyed this book by Emily Harper. Etty Lawrence, a struggling romance writer, soon realizes that her writing isn't coming across the way she would like because it's too unrealistic. And it's unrealistic because Etty herself has never experienced real love. Etty, an adorable, overly enthusiastic young woman, is surrounded by people who love and support her, her parents, her brother, her best friend, and her brother's best friend, Travis. They all seem to be willing to do what it takes to he [...]

I won this book through Good reads and just received it the day before. I was so impressed I love the cover it's simple and sweet, and the Author had signed it with my name and everything! (Spelled right too!) It made it really special and fun. Two hours ago I picked the book up thinking I would just read the first chapter and try it. Clearly that didn't happen, I just finished it and I can't stop smiling. (My cheeks are actually starting to hurt) This book was just the sweetest thing I have eve [...]

I won this book in a First Reads giveaway and was really looking forward to it. I've heard great things about Harper and try to be as supportive as possible for local authors. This book is a great beach read and was filled with quirky and endearing characters. While the story line itself is not unique, I enjoyed the characters so much (and the Toronto backdrop) that I didn't mind.

A cute short story

4.4This was freaking cute! super light and funny :)

easy fun read. the plot is very predictable but still pleasant with the quirkiness of the main character. fast amusing chik lit.

This book is so good and it hurts me to see that the reviews aren't as high as they should be. I loved this book and felt like it was well written and I wish people would read it. Farah Merchant

Highly recommended to those who wants a quick-read and angst-free fluff.
