Fatal Act is the sixth DI Geraldine Steel story from Leigh Russell, I reviewed her last book Stop Dead back in August 2013.I mentioned in my review of Stop Dead that I hadn't read any of the previous novels in the series, but this did not spoil my enjoyment or understanding of the story. Fatal Act works perfectly well as a stand-alone story too. The author cleverly updates the reader about Geraldine's past without straying away from the current plot at all.Geraldine Steel and her colleague Sam a [...]

I had a dilemma when I received Fatal Act for review from Real Readers. This is the sixth book in the series and I had previously purchased the earlier five books for my Kindle but hadn’t yet got round to reading them. Rather than delay the review of this until I had read the other 5, I decided to just jump in, knowing that I would no doubt be missing a back story. Actually, it didn’t really matter at all that I hadn’t read the previous stories – this can be read as a standalone. This st [...]

I have read all of the books in the Geraldine Steel series and this is the 6th book in the series. The series has changed somewhat with her colleague Ian Peterson leaving Geraldine (and now having his own series of books), and Geraldine relocating to London. This latest book starts off with a particularly exciting scene involving a glamorous young TV star who dies in a fatal road accident. When Geraldine is called in it appears to be a standard collision, except for the fact that the driver of t [...]

'Fatal Act' was published in paperback on the 29th May 2014 by No Exit Press. It is the sixth book in the DI Geraldine Steel series. Before now, I had never read any of Leigh Russell’s books so this was a new experience for me.Anna Porter, a glamorous young TV soap star is killed in a car crash. It looks like an accident but it soon becomes evident that it is more than that. Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel is brought in to investigate. Somehow the driver of the second vehicle has mysteriou [...]

I had never heard of this author before so when I received this book to review it is my kind of genre and I was keen to read it and see what I thought. The story was about the murders of three individuals all involved in the acting industry and all linked in someway. The lead detective was Geraldine Steel and she was determined to track down the mystery killer that disappeared and left no clues. There have been several other books written by Leigh Russell involving the same detective, this is the [...]

A young actress has died in a car crash but there appears to be no sign of the other driver. Then another actress dies and the police realize they have a murderer to find who leaves no traces. The story is set around Geraldine Steel and her sergeant Sam Haley. Haley is junior and the reader is told this on lots of occasions, but she has a good relationship with Geraldine. I have enjoyed all of the Geraldine Steel series, this is the sixth case and this did not disappoint. There were lots of twis [...]

This was my first book by this author. I'm not usually keen on reading books that are part of an established series that I've not tried , but this did work well as a stand alone novel.Russell really ramps up the tension in the first part of the book which encouraged me to be positive about reading on. The set up of the crime is ingenious. Unfortunately, I found the signposting to the killer's identity a little too clear quite early on in the book, and became a little irritated that the investiga [...]

Actress Anna storms out of her house following an argument with her boyfriend. She is pursued by a van which eventually crashes into her. When the police arrive on the scene Anna is dead but not from the injuries sustained in the crash and the van driver has disappeared. Steel and her team delve into the theatrical world to try to find out who the vanishing murderer is and before long another actress is killed.I think this is the weakest book in the series. The storyline seemed very drawn out an [...]

Quick easy read. I guessed the ending early on. Not massively compelling but decided to continue to the end

Robbie's ReviewFatal Act, author Leigh Russell's latest entry in her Detective Geraldine Steel mystery series, opens with a homicide. No surprise there, but what is surprising to readers is the murder weapon . . . an old beat up van! When Detective Geraldine Steel and her sergeant, Sam Haley, are called to investigate a fatal car crash, Sam is puzzled and a bit insulted as to why Homicide has been called rather than Traffic to investigate. Geraldine and Sam are even more puzzled when the scant e [...]

There are many good crime and police procedural novels out there at the moment. Unfortunately, in my opinion, this is not one of those This novel, by Leigh Russell, is the seventh in a series of books featuring her female heroine Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel. Not having read the previous books it is possible to read this as a stand alone tale. But if I had not been sent this by Real Readers to review I would have applied my page fifty rule and abandoned it. As it was I struggled on.The bo [...]

A young soap actress dies in a brutal crash with another vehicle, but though the second vehicle is still there when the emergency services arrive the driver is not. Given the damage caused by the crash Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel can’t believe he or she could have escaped unscathed. As the police investigation progresses further murders take place with the perpetrator escaping each scene in a seemingly impossible way. DI Steel struggles to make any headway in finding the killer until t [...]

Fatal Act – Excellent thrillerFatal Act by Leigh Russell is the sixth outing for Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel but my first time reading of anything by Russell. I can say I really enjoyed reading the story, the plot is strong and the writing just flows with style and panache. One of the advantages of Fatal Act is for a thriller it could be looked at as a short story with just 320 pages so there is no overblown descriptions and the story is kept moving.DI Geraldine Steel and her Sergeant [...]

A glamorous young TV soap star dies in a car crash. Returning for her sixth case, Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel is baffled as the driver of the second vehicle miraculously survives, and vanishes. Another young actress is murdered and, once again, the killer mysteriously disappears. Geraldine realises she is on the case of a serial killer who leaves no clues. This is a skilfully-plotted novel that presents a most intriguing and well executed mystery, which takes the reader through the back [...]

This is the second Leigh Russell book I have read, and the second Geraldine Steel Mystery I have read. Fatal Act is the 6th Geraldine Steel Mystery that has been released, with Stop Dead being the 5th Geraldine Steel Mystery.I enjoyed Fatal Act, however, it is not the most suspense driven mystery I have read. I have the same criticism as I did with Stop Dead is that it is slightly too methodical for me, Geraldine, the main protagonist does not feel truly human for me. However, this criticism is [...]

Last July Real Readers sent me Cold Sacrifice by Leigh Russell to read and review, and I had to admit that not only had I never read a previous Leigh Russell novel, but in fact had actually never even heard of her. That book was the first and so far only DS Ian Peterson investigation, a spin off character from her DI Geraldine Steel series of books. The latest book her sixth in that series Fatal Act I recently received from Real Readers and have just finished. As in that previous book this is a m [...]

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*I like a good mystery and suspense thriller. I love being gripped by the story and not being able to figure out who the bad guy is and what their motive was. This book does not fall into that category for me. The first part of the book was decent. I wasn't sure what was going on or what the motive was for the killing. But, about halfway through the book, maybe a little more, I had it figured out. There was no element of surprise a [...]

I have already read the first 5 Geraldine Steel books and sadly, I think this one was my least favourite so far. It is a well written crime thriller, with great detail to police procedures as with all of Leigh Russell's books.I found this one lacking due to the lack of character development. Geraldine Steel is a great detective and over the previous five books, her private life has been one of the interesting aspects of the stories. Her marriage is to her job and she finds her isolation difficul [...]

I was lucky to get a pre publication copy of this book from Real Readers for an honest review.I enjoyed getting to know DI Geraldine Steel and her team as they are called to a car accident when a young soap starlet dies. All isnt as it seems and of course it turns out to be a murde but where is the driver of the other vehicle? how did he or she survive the crash unscathed. It seems her older boyfriend Piers is the owner of the vehicle and he and his son both have access to the van. Then another m [...]

Fatal Act is the sixth book in the Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel series and the third Leigh Russell book I've read and I think this is the best of them. When a TV soap star is killed in a car crash it seems like an accident at first but it then becomes clear that she was murdered. Her older lover is the main suspect, especially when another young actress who was known to him is also murdered. For Geraldine work gave her life meaning and purpose and she has to juggle her personal life with h [...]

Before I read this I'd never heard of Leigh Russell. I am always slightly 'put off' any novel which seems to be an ongoing one in a series. This novel is the 6th DI Geraldine Steel Mystery, but stands alone superbly. I particularly liked the way the author writes in short paragraphs. The main character is the female DI who isn't described in much detail yet we are given enough to understand some of her behaviour and attitudes. Other characters are similarly undetailed but developed well enough. [...]

This is book 6 in the series, it actually can be read as a standalone if you haven't read the others yet. I thought the beginning captured you right from the start. After a arguement with her boyfriend Anna storms out the house, gets followed and a accident occurred and later found dead but not from the actual accident. I loved the suspense right off the bat then the story kind if died for me. It didn't continue to flow well for me, there was some mystery and suspense but nothing gripping. I fin [...]

Kindle Copy for Review Detective Geraldine Steel finds herself in the middle of investigating the murder of a high profile young soap opera actress. All evidence points to her older successful live in boyfriend as the prime suspect but Geraldine does not quite thing so.At first it appears to be a car accident but when they find that she was stabbed by a glass from the accident they realized she was murder. The other vehicle in the accident was owned by her boyfriend and no one saw anyone leaving [...]

The plot centres around the murders of 3 young people, connected by a drama school, and casting agent, Piers Trevelyan. DI Geraldine Steel, and DS Sam Haley try to solve them before the mysterious culprit strikes again. This is my first DI Steel book and I enjoyed it. It is well-written, and an easy read. It flows at a steady pace, and picks up nicely towards the end. The plot is strong, and the characters are believable, but not always likeable. Sam tended to get on my nerves at times, with her [...]

I have never tried a Geraldine Steel novel and I'm afraid to say I won't be trying anotherI have had to abandon this novel about 3 chapters in as I'm finding it quite boring. It started off with potential, I was intrigued to know who had killed Anna. Unfortunately from what I have read, you are either placed at the scene of the crime, the police station or the suspects house and that is it. There is no depth to the characters - we do not learn anything personal about them, therefore I could not [...]

I really enjoyed this thriller and its twists and turns.''A glamorous young TV soap star dies in a car crash. Returning for her sixth case, Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel is baffled as the driver of the second vehicle miraculously survives - and vanishes. Another young actress is murdered and, once again, the killer mysteriously disappears. Geraldine unwittingly risks her sergeant's life in their struggle to track down a serial killer who leaves no clues''.

First book I've read from Leigh Russell and I enjoyed it! An easy read with Geraldine Steel the main detective investigating a mysterious murder. As the story progresses the characters develop, with more murders along the way. I would read more of this series with the short chapters making it more tense at a quick pace.
