(Reprinted from the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography [cclapcenter]. I am the original author of this essay, as well as the owner of CCLaP; it is not being reprinted illegally.)Jackie Parker's Our Lady of Infidelity is actually not a bad little book at all, despite some of the criticisms I'll be making before this write-up is over; a magical-realism tale set in the American Southwest, it's essentially a look at the ways the eclectic population of a small town (think Northern Exposure [...]
What an interesting book! A little hard to follow at first and throughout some parts of the book, but overall a very good book. Jackie Parker has a way about her writing that allows you to feel as if you know the characters in the book up close and personal. Some of the fiction versus mystic imagery was a little off kilter for me. However, I am guessing part of that was the author's underlying objective; to get us to believe that there are things that we might never believe if we don't experienc [...]
I loved this book! This beautifully and intelligently written novel is brimming with well-drawn and endearing characters, rich imagery , thought-provoking subject matter, and a touch of the magical. The characters are called upon to explore and challenge their ideas of Love, Faith, Religion, and Destiny. I took the ride right alongside them and came away entertained, deeply moved and inspired.
Been a long time since I've added to my book shelf. I've read a lot of books but nothing that moved me. This book is special. It is the "Kingdom of God": here now and not yet. The story of a child who belongs to the kingdom; the story of loves too many, too varied to be other that LOVE. Don't know how Ms. Parker did it. Probably she's been there. Another Gospel. Read it.
Loved meeting Luz Reyes and her Felangela Zoe!
This is the book that brought me back to fiction after nearly 30 years. Not that I gave in easily. I kept resisting, putting the book down every few pages, picking it up again a few days later. Then at about page twenty I was transported to Infidelity. I was there on the sidewalk with Luz and Zoe and Josephina. I felt the warmth of gazing into the eyes of Luz. I simply could not put Our Lady of Infidelity down until I finished, then went back to read those first twenty pages again. Our Lady of In [...]
Our Lady of Infidelity is a tremendously enjoyable, beautiful book. Thechild who is its protagonist is a little mystic, representing a littlevoice deep inside of us. Tying together the rich chords of Westernmysticism and our modern, skeptical sensibilities, Jackie Parker is awonderful writer. The way she weaves themes together, builds the story andits characters, and uses language is magical. The book is an inspiration.
A surprisingly good read, even for someone like myself who isn't really into magic realism. Quirky, but sympathetic characters, well written, entertaining, as long as you can manage multiple identity crises at the same time.
I won this on good reads. Our Lady of Infidelity is an enjoyable book about miracles large and small. Interesting characters intertwine with different levels of belief and nonbelief. Great ending. Glad I read it.
I received a free copy of this book for the GoodReads First Reads program in exchange for an honest review. Great book, loved it, very enjoyable read.
Well-written, but not my type of writing or book.
This is a wonderful book
