On the 12th October 1492, Columbus 'discovered' America but on the other side of the coin, 12th October 1492 was the day the Taino people saw the invasion of the Spanish. Had the Native Americans not been so complacent; had the Spanish not been so cruel, perhaps there would have been some historical journal of what life was like for a Taino. Unfortunately, history as it is, we do not have that picture, we do not have that day in the life of Americans before death landed on their shores. However, [...]
2.5 stars. When I first started this book, I was very immersed in the idea of the story. Maruka is a very rebellious and brave person in my perspective. And their religion really interest me. At that time, of course, there was no such thing as feminism. Women are second beings, they are not allowed to do anything other than sewing and cooking and raisi [...]
I read half way through the book, and personally it didn't do much for me. I'd probably have enjoyed it more if I had more time to read it continuously, however it somewhat didn't improve for me. Some parts where good, however some dragged on and I found it personally hard to follow. Not sure if that applies to anyone else who has read it, but if you like magical related topics then I would recommend this book. But still, I prefer books that get to the point much quicker than this did.
i really liked Blooms writing and thought The Tribe a good but occaisionly scary read, well it wasn't that scary but i got the shivers whenever Maruka, the main character, tells the reader about the dead. it was in the childrens section in the book centre but i would of called it reality/children to be honest, just to warn parents or children who might by the book. i enjoyed this book very much though.
