A retelling of the well-known fairytale, Rapunzel told from the view of her younger sister, Juniper, who grew up with their natural parents. It's a short book, that I read in under an hour. It certainly was an enjoyable read, but little about it remains in my memory now that I'm finished. I have a general feeling of understatement (not a bad thing) in the writing, but somethings remained unfleshed -- when Juniper is thrown out of the house by her mother, for example. It's pleasantly dark in the [...]
Beauty’s Sister is an exquisite retelling of the Rapunzel fairy tale, published as a Penguin Special. Too short to be a novel, too long to be a story, I’d call this a novelette. Penguin Specials are designed to be read in half an hour or so, perfect for a commute or a quick bite between larger narrative fare. I loved it. Bradley’s writing is spare and precise, his images haunting, and his plot reimagines the well-known fairy tale from the point of view of Rapunzel’s darker, wilder sister [...]
A beautiful short story told in the perspective of Rapunzel's sister.
I always loved the story of Rapunzel as a young child and picked up this book from the library, out of curiosity. The author has taken the well known fable and put an adult twist to it, with not much success.
Beauty's Sister by James Bradley is a Penguin Special, an e-book developed for commuters to read on a long trip or readers to enjoy in one evening.Beauty's Sister is a re-telling of the well-known fairytale Rapunzel. Fairytales have been popular for the last couple of years, however this tale is told from the point of view of Rapunzel's lesser known sister, Juniper. There is a witch and a tower in this tale of jealousy and relationships, and Beauty's Sister is a very quick and easy read. I'd lov [...]
The re-telling of fairytales is popular at the moment and this is a great example. This story retained the fairytale 'feel', only gradually revealing the link to Rapunzel. I loved the way different aspects of the original tale were explained in this version and all up it was a very enjoyable read.I received this book as a free e-book ARC via NetGalley.
This is a lovely little vignette. A fresh take on the Rapunzel tale, told from the view of the other, less-favoured sibling. Juniper discovers a sister she has never known - the result of a set of bad decisions by their parents. The story is one of relationships and consequences - a morality play of sorts. Just the right amount of engagement to mark the loneliness of everyone in this tale.
James Bradley has re-told this fairy tale in a fresh way that captures the feel and emotions we expect from fairy tales without being slavish to the original. Beautifully written, my only complaint is that I wish it had been longer.
