I guess I was hoping for more info about wolves themselves and less about social issues surrounding them. I get that it's relevant but not really what I wanted to read personally. The section on wolf behavior felt really sparse for a book about wolves :-( also, the pics of dead wolves made me really sad! I cried several times reading this book. Just not "wowed" here
I bought this when I was writing "The Windwater Pack" and repeatedly referenced it throughout the first draft. I use the photos as reference for art work as well. The book, small as it is, is wonderful and is one I won't get rid of any time soon. It's easy to look up details - such as the fact some wolves do have blue eyes all their lives, though I didn't keep this trait for the character I used it for and the lifespan of wild and captive wolves. An absolutely wonderful read. It covers most subjects relating to wolves from their biology to their mythology. It is slightly dated in some respects, but most of the general information is good. It focuses on facts, but manages to convey them in a way that is more interesting than reading a technical scientific paper. It also has a great selection of color photos illustrating the subject mater.
The almanac of wolves gives good detail on what wolves are and what they do as animals. The first part of the book I especially liked because it told you about the wolves themselves but after that it was what humans have to do with them, it was not truly about the wolves.
An insightful observation into the world of wolves and how our perspectives of these beautiful creatures must change to reflect that of reality. The photography is gorgeous and matches very well with the descriptions and information given to the reader. A worthwhile read.
Not bad for a coffee table book. Adding information about wolves worldwide was interesting.
If you love wolves, check out this book. If you don't I still recommend looking at it.
