This book is pretty typical of Levenson's approach to Jewish Studies. He takes a skeptical approach to modern biblical scholarship that relies on parallels to other ancient Near Eastern cultures in an attempt to conserve traditional rabbinical doctrine. I have been reading various books in trying to comprehend original Jewish thoughts and ideas that are embedded in the entirety of scripture, and that is what original drew me to this title. There was a lot about this book to like. Besides tracing the idea of resurrection throughout the Hebrew Bible, Levenson also touches upon other subjects that deserve further consideration. Among these, he calls into question the idea of an immortal soul, which he deems to be a later construction; he also deals some with the corporate way of Israelite thinking, which is so foreign to the modern man. Of course, perhaps the book's greatest challenge is the diachronic approach to the Hebrew Bible. T [...]
